(READ: A Common Thread Binds Brewing and Comedy)įor decades, seeing a quality stand-up comedy show meant getting fancied up, going to a local comedy club, seeing a nationally touring headliner and buying at least two menu items. Once again, these people were seeing a great comedy show paired with fantastic beer - and it was simply wonderful. At the time, On Tour was less than a year old so it was no surprise that when a comic asked, “Who’s been here before?” nearly three-fourths of the audience raised their hands. Once again, a palpable energy filled the taproom as nearly 100 people came out to support a show comprised of local talent. It was a night of pure joy, all made easier with great comedy and amazing beer.Ī few months later, I found myself in Chicago at On Tour Brewing for another first-time comedy show. Comics riffed on beer names like “Spy Dolphin” and “Lustra” as audience members sampled beer and ordered pint after pint. A city had come out in mass to support its local creatives in both local beer and in comedy. Even as someone who has been performing for nearly a decade, I have trouble describing the energy in the room that night. Dancing Gnome Beer, a small independently owned brewery just outside of Pittsburgh, was having its first comedy night featuring mostly local comedians. Singh’s most memorable bit involves a white hand-puppet named “Bob ‘the taken alive into custody’ terrorist” in neo-nazi garb-a bit that absurdly morphs anger against white supremacy into anger against ventriloquism. Singh masterfully sweetens his acerbic critique of bigotry with absurdist humor. As an ethnic minority Sikhs have faced persecution here in the US and abroad. Singh is a Sikh-he’s turbaned, bearded, and gifted at weaving intricate yarns with professorial elocution. Part of the proceeds from the March 8th and 10th shows went towards renovations at Indy Hostel, following a freak accident in which a car plowed through a room earlier this year.įriday saw Chicago-based Arish Singh headline. Both nights the line ups included a variety of local and national performers, serving as a preview for Rocketship Comedy’s highly anticipated inaugural Yuck Fest taking place at the end of April. Don’t you tell me how many drinks I can minimally buy.įriday March 8th and Sunday March 10th, Yuck Fest featured two separate shows headlined by nationally-recognized comics of color. $5 or $10 for 90 minutes of high-quality live comedy for is about as good as it gets. Rocketship Comedy has been disrupting the staid order of 2-drink minimums since debuting in 2011 at the Sinking Ship.
